Today is a massive day for our U17 boyโs team as they have the chance to create their own piece of history when they face Cork City FC in the Final of The Mark Farren Cup.
The Mark Farren Cup is the pinnacle of cup football in Ireland at this level and it is an achievement in itself to make the final. The lads had a tough run to the final and had to overcome some of the best U17 teams in the country along the way. To reach the knockout stages they had to qualify for a very tough group with Derry City, Longford Town and St. Patricks Athletic whom they would meet again in the semi final.
The knock out stages were equally tough and their first game was against UCD with the lads securing a 2 -1 win to advance to the quarter finals.
In the quarter final they met Shamrock Rovers and in a titanic battle which went to extra time the lads came out on top in a 3 โ 1 win.
By virtue of that win they met St. Patrickโs Athletic in the semi final and having previously lost to them 3 โ 1 in the group stage the lads knew that this was not going to be easy. However they stuck to their game plan and didnโt allow Patโs to get a foothold in the game and were two up by half time. With 10 minutes to go they made sure of their final place when they scored the third and when the final whistle came there was great celebrations in the stand as well as on the pitch.
The Final is being played at 2.00pm today in The Athlone Town Stadium and the lads have a great chance to create their own piece of history and claim the ultimate crown, the Mark Farren Cup.
