The two senior Teams were in friendly action over the last two days.
The Senior Men welcomed Premier Division Sligo Rovers to The Stadium on Friday night and put in a performance that was much improved over the one against Shels a week earlier.
Sligo ultimately ran out 2 - 1 winners but were made work all the way by an Athlone team, who for periods of the match, kept them penned back in their own half. Jack Kavanagh, only hours after his signing for the Town was announced, capped off a terrific performance when he latched onto a through ball form Patrick Hickey and cut into the box from the left to power a shot past the keeper and cancel out Sligo's first half penalty. The lead was not to last long as on virtually Sligo's next attack they restored their one goal lead and that is how the game ended.
The Senior Ladies headed to Sligo yesterday(Saturday) for their first pre-season friendly of 2023. The Ladies got off to a great start when Chloe Singleton, on her debut scored, in the 10' to give The Town the lead. Sligo restored parity on the 29' from the penalty spot. Just six minutes into the second half Chloe struck again to put her team back into the lead and that lead was further extended just four minutes later when Muireann Devaney scored to give the Ladies a 3 - 1 lead and secure the win. Also making their senior team debut's were Eve Conheady(Formerly Peamount), Shauna Brennan(formerly Galway WFC), Lucy Fitzgerald from our U17 team and Olivia Killackey from our U19 team.
The Ladies will face Sligo Rovers again next Saturday, 4th February, and kick off in The Athlone Town Stadium will be at 2.00pm.
